Domaine Dureuil-Janthial

Vincent Dureuil may be one of Burgundy wine’s most self-effacing figures, but he’s quietly setting the benchmark for the Côte Chalonnaise. William Kelley even refers to him as a “Rully superstar”. With the Janthial family in the village since the 13th century, Vincent and wife Céline took over their domaine in 1994, and are now producing exacting, energetic, beautifully defined red and white wines from this idyllic, but often overlooked, part of Burgundy. Given how close the vineyards are to the best villages of the Côte de Beaune, just to the north, it is no wonder excellence is possible here, and Vincent is making the most of it.

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial spans 17ha across Rully and Mercurey with a further 3 ha in the Côte d’Or (with some vines inherited by Vincent in Puligny-Montrachet, others by Céline in Nuits-Saint-Georges), and this translates into 20 different cuvées. The couple say they’ve “chosen to respect the land and bring the soils and vines to life to produce committed and precise wines, of great purity and frank personality.”

That commitment is clear, since it can be difficult to pin the man himself down, such is his dedication to being in his vineyards. Vincent is a modest and hard-working farmer, and it is his diligent approach to viticulture that results in such high quality of fruit. He worked organically from 2009 but in 2016 sacrificed his certification when particularly challenging conditions forced him to use a non-certified substance to save the harvest from mildew (75% was lost that year). Ironically, the copper-based treatments that would have been allowed under organics felt harsher to Vincent, whose commitment to doing what is best for his vines outweighed the prolonged effort that has subsequently been necessary to re-convert his land, officially, to organic status. The 2021 vintage will once again be accredited.

In the winery, the whites see 25% new oak and are finished in stainless steel. Reds are fully destemmed and undergo a cold maceration prior to a slow alcoholic fermentation, followed by yet more – gentle – maceration. They are matured in barrels and finished in stainless steel, which helps explain their signature combination of character, tension and accuracy. Dureuil-Janthial’s wines have long been solid examples of Rully terroirs, but the last few vintages have taken quality to a whole new level.
